Building a Better Future: Bricklaying and Façade Installation Academy Opened by Helene Dearn OBE

February 14th, 2025

We are thrilled to announce the launch of Caxton Academy, delivering apprenticeships in partnership with Birmingham-based training provider Salutem.

The ST-0095 level apprenticeship courses exceed the Government standard and will provide young people with the knowledge and practical experience they need to excel in bricklaying and façade installation.

Officially opened by Helene Dearn OBE

The Academy was officially opened on 6 February 2025 by Helene Dearn OBE, interim Director of Employment, Skills, Health, and Communities at West Midlands Combined Authorities (WMCA).

Helene said: “The construction sector is a cornerstone of the West Midlands economy, and as we push forward with ambitious projects for new housing, regeneration, and transport, we must act to meet the rising demand for skilled workers.

That’s why Caxton Academy is so important, giving people hands-on, high-quality training in the skills that businesses need. It also provides apprenticeships designed to get young talent site-ready from day one. Last year, we invested £14.2 million in construction skills training, and we’re working with employers like Caxton to expand apprenticeships and career pathways.

With youth unemployment in the West Midlands double the national average, we need to bring more young people into industries like construction. This academy offers real career opportunities and directly supports the Mayor’s pledge to create 20,000 learning and work placements. Now, we need more employers to step up, open doors for young people, and invest in the skills that will help build the region’s future.”

St Joseph Homes

We were also joined by valued client, St Joseph Homes, welcoming Regional Social Value Manager, Deepak Chavda. We were also delighted to meet Amanda Lloyd, Employment Manager for Social Value and S106 at Birmingham City Council.

Skills shortage in the construction industry

There is a shortage of bricklayers in the UK, with demand significantly outstripping supply. One of the key challenges lies in encouraging young people to consider careers in construction with fewer people aged 16 to 24-year exploring job opportunities in the industry. One in five UK-born construction workers is over the age of 55, creating an urgent need to train new talent. This shortage has placed immense pressure on the construction industry, delaying projects and driving up costs.

Government Plans for Change

The government has pledged to build 1.5 million homes in England by the next election. The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) estimated the government’s homebuilding plans would require up to 159,000 more workers, which is in addition to the 250,000 already needed to meet the other forecasted building works through to 2028. A personal journey to inspire the next generation

The Academy launch represents a significant milestone for John Webber, Founder and Chairman of Caxton Group and Stofix UK, who began his career as a bricklaying apprentice in the West Midlands. Reflecting on his journey, John shared:

“At the age of 16, I left school to become a bricklaying apprentice. Having dedicated my entire working life to this sector, I am passionate about supporting young people who want to build successful careers, and the Academy represents our commitment to creating opportunities for young people. Our aim is for our apprentices to complete the course and go on to have a successful career at Caxton Group and Stofix UK”.

Training for a Better Future

Ivan Sharpe, Academy Apprentice Manager, explains what makes our apprenticeship programs unique:

  •   Intensive Six-Week Block Learning – Students practice daily, developing skills faster and becoming site-ready well ahead of traditional programs. Day release doesn’t provide enough hands-on experience to build confidence.
  •   Practical On-Site Readiness – Apprentices who arrive with basic brickwork skills, such as spreading, pointing, and laying, are more likely to be allowed to practice on-site rather than just labouring.
  •   Encouraging Curiosity – A foundation of knowledge makes apprentices more inquisitive, prompting site teams to be more responsive in guiding and mentoring them.
  •   Safety Awareness – Early training ensures apprentices understand potential size hazards and their responsibility to themselves and others.
  •   Real Project Contributions – Unlike traditional programs, our approach allows apprentices to contribute to real projects early, boosting their sense of achievement, confidence, and value.
  •   Optional Third Year – This additional year helps apprentices transition into skilled, confident bricklayers while still receiving support from Caxton Academy.
  •   Small Class Sizes – With only 6-10 students per class, apprentices receive personalised support from their tutor.

We would like to thank all of our Caxton Academy sponsors – Stanley, SIG, Miers, Fixings Plus, Encon, VJT, Safestand, The Mortar and Screed Company, Mayplas, Leviat and AIM.
